NEW YORK CITY, New York: Decades after the last Godfather film and more than 10 years since the last book, the story of the Corleone crime family is getting a new chapter—this time told from a woman's perspective.
Publisher Random House said it has approved a new novel called "Connie," written by bestselling author Adriana Trigiani and authorized by the estate of Mario Puzo. The book is set for release in fall 2027 and will focus on Connie Corleone, the character played by Talia Shire in the films.
This will be the third Godfather book approved by Puzo's estate and the first written by a woman. Trigiani said the novel will show how a woman builds her own path in a world that already judges her, adding that Connie, like her father and brother, should not be underestimated.
Paramount Pictures, which made the movies, owns the film rights, though more details are not yet known.
Puzo's original 1969 novel led to the famous films. After he died in 1999, his estate had legal disputes with Paramount over the rights to the characters. They later reached an agreement that allowed new books while Paramount kept the movie rights.
The last film, The Godfather: Part III, was released in 1990. The movies starred Al Pacino as Michael Corleone, along with actors such as Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton. The series earned over $400 million worldwide and won nine Oscars, including two for Puzo.
Trigiani, known for novels like The Shoemaker's Wife, was chosen after she wrote about how little attention the women in the Corleone family had received. Puzo's son, Anthony Puzo, said her ideas for Connie's story impressed the family and that they are excited to work with her.
