William Nylander scored 3:09 into overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday to conclude the NHL Global Series at Stockholm, Sweden.
Nylander extended his club-record, season-opening point streak to 17 games with an assist earlier in the contest. He later skated in with the puck and beat Wild netminder Marc-Andre Fleury (21 saves) on the short side for the victory.
Nylander, who resides in Sweden during the offseason, had a goal with two assists during Toronto's 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
Defenseman Morgan Rielly had a goal with two assists and Auston Matthews joined Nylander with one of each on Sunday for the Maple Leafs, who prevailed despite squandering a two-goal lead.
The Wild, who earned two points in two games at Stockholm, trailed 3-1 early in the third period before storming back with two goals in approximately 2 1/2 minutes.
Jake Middleton's slap shot slipped past screened Toronto goaltender Joseph Woll (33 saves) at 6:10 of the third period. Then Mats Zuccarello poked home Brock Faber's net-front pass to level things with 11:18 remaining.
Minnesota scored just 2:37 into the contest after defenseman Jon Merrill sent in a snap shot through traffic. The Maple Leafs answered with 7:17 remaining in the opening period when Matthews, following a tap from Nylander, got enough of the puck amid a crowd in front of the net to get it by Fleury just five seconds into their power play.
The Leafs took the lead with 1:37 to play before the first intermission. On a breakout, Mitchell Marner sent a zone-wide pass for Matthew Knies to convert for his fifth goal.
Minnesota outshot Toronto 11-5 during a scoreless second period. The Wild, though, failed to convert on three power-play chances during the middle frame.
Toronto appeared to create some breathing room just 4:22 into the third period. Marner got the puck to Matthews, who skated out from behind the net and backhanded it for Rielly to put home for a two-goal edge.
