A pair of seeded U.S. players earned straight-set wins in second-round matches on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Dallas Open.
Second-seeded Frances Tiafoe routed countryman Mackenzie McDonald 6-1, 6-3, and sixth-seeded J.J. Wolf ousted Moldova's Radu Albot 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Tiafoe, who got a first-round bye, needed just 58 minutes to dispatch McDonald. He won 85 percent of his first-serve points and saved the only break point he faced.
Wolf worked in and out of trouble on his serve, saving nine of Albot's 10 break points. After winning five consecutive points early in the second-set tiebreaker, Wolf sealed the victory on his third match point.
In the last match of the night, China's Yibing Wu upset third-seeded Denis Shapovalov of Canada 7-6 (1), 6-4 in second-round action.
Ecuador's Emilio Gomez and two Germans, Oscar Otte and Daniel Altmaier, won first-round matches.
Cordoba Open
Chilean wild-card entrant Tomas Barrios Vera rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over eighth-seeded Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain in the second round at Cordoba, Argentina.
Barrios Vera, who is ranked 212th in the world, is playing in his first main-draw ATP Tour event since losing in the first round of the 2022 Australian Open. He prevailed on Wednesday despite serving no aces and putting just 58 percent of his first serves in play.
Joining Barrios Vera in the quarterfinals is fourth-seeded Sebastian Baez of Argentina, who defeated Italian qualifier Luciano Darderi 6-3, 6-4.
Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien, Italy's Marco Cecchinato and Portugal's Joao Sousa posted first-round wins.
Open Sud de France
France's Arthur Fils upset fourth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-3, 6-4 in the second round at Montpellier, France.
Fils, an 18-year-old wild-card entrant who is ranked No. 163 in the world, had never won a main-draw match on the ATP Tour before this week.
Second-seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy also moved into the quarterfinals when he got a walkover win over Hungary's Marton Fucsovics, who had an injury.
Fifth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, seventh-seeded Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland and Gregoire Barrere of France won their opening-round matches.
