SIBERIA, Russia - In the third such attack where a teenager has launched a violent attack on other students at Russian schools, on Friday, a teenager attacked a group of students with an axe and a firebomb.
In the incident on Friday, a teenage student at a school in southeastern Siberia attacked a group of younger students with an axe, leaving at least six other people injured before trying to kill himself.
The student was armed with an axe and officials said that he stormed into a school in the Siberian city of Ulan-Ude.
The student then used a Molotov cocktail to set the building on fire.
Authorities in the Buryatia Republic said of the seven people wounded, one of them, a 13-year-old girl, is in a coma.
Local media reports stated initially that a student stormed the high school with an axe and attacked a teacher and at least three students.
Some reports said that he chopped off one of the victim’s fingers.
The Telegram news channel Mash carried a report on the incident and identified the student as ‘Anton,’ who entered the school armed with an axe and a Molotov cocktail.
He is said to have entered one of the classrooms, where a seventh-grade Russian Language and Literature class was underway.
The attacker then opened the door and threw the petrol bomb inside, starting a fire and causing panic.
When the blaze started, the teacher tried to protect the children in the class and confronted the attacker, who is said to have hit her with the axe before attacking the students.
The fire at the school was confirmed by the regional office of the emergencies ministry, which added that the flames were quickly extinguished.
While reports noted that over 500 people were evacuated from the school, no confirmed reports of injuries were reported in the blaze.
A report in Ruptly cited a local woman as saying that the perpetrator had earlier told one of the schoolgirls about his plans via the Viber messaging app.
The woman added, “The boy told her [the girl] not to go to school because ‘there will be a massacre.’”
According to witnesses, the attacker knocked down one of the students, hit her in the head with the axe several times, while another student was slashed in the face.
The teacher meanwhile sustained injuries on the head and has been hospitalized.
The police have launched a criminal case against the attacker on charges of attempted murder.
Local investigators also said that they will also look into whether the school staff did enough to prevent the attack.
Over the last six months, similar incidents have taken place in Russian schools and law enforcement officials are now looking at whether the incidents are interlinked.
The incident on Friday was the second school attack in Russia in less than a week.
On Monday, at least a dozen people were injured in a school in the city of Perm, after an 11th grader and a former student entered the building armed with knives and attacked a female teacher and nine students.
