NATO officials have confirmed separate attacks have killed five soldiers in southern Afghanistan.

Three coalition soldiers were killed in a bomb attack on Thursday while another soldier was killed in a separate bombing.

An insurgent attack killed a fifth soldier of the international forces in Afghanistan.

NATO commanders have said there has been heavy fighting with Afghan and NATO-led forces trying to clear the southern city of Kandahar and surrounding districts of Taliban insurgents.

Also on Thursday, four Afghan civilians were killed and three others wounded during a NATO operation when a helicopter fired on them.

It is believed the civilians were struck accidentally during an operation in Ghazni province.
