Firm's Job Analysis 'Not The Basis' For End Of Mining Contract -US Official

Dow Jones )- An environmental engineering firm's analysis showing a new U.S. mining regulation could lead to coal-mining job losses wasn't the basis for the Obama administration's decision to part ways with the contractor, a top Interior Department official said Thursday. Polu Kai Services LLC, of Falls Church, Va., was hired to conduct a general environmental analysis, including potential job losses. When the results were made public in January, some lawmakers seized on it as evidence the stream protection rule, which is still under development, would hurt the economy. The Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation, and Enforcement later said the jobs numbers weren't valid and ended the contract with Polu Kai.
