Red Cross asks Israel to lift Gaza controls

Toronto Telegraph Friday 14th December, 2007

The International Committee of the Red Cross claims Israeli restrictions have caused a humanitarian crisis in Gaza which is growing worse.

The Red Cross has called on Israel to lift the measures which are paralysing life in Gaza and has urged Palestinian factions to stop targeting civilian areas in Israel.

The humanitarian organisation says lives are now at risk in Gaza with hospitals unable to cope and with people living with little enough to survive, but not enough to live a normal and dignified life.

The Palestinian population has become hostage to the conflict since most crossing points were closed to the 1.4 million Palestinians living in Gaza.

While Israel says it has simply been protecting its territory, the Red Cross says the balance has been skewed between Israel's security concerns and the protection of the rights and liberties of the Palestinians living under occupation.
