Suspect in slaying of Argentine singer nabbed
Toronto Telegraph (IANS) Wednesday 14th March, 2012
Colombian police confirmed Tuesday the arrest of a Costa Rican man accused of being behind the July 2011 killing of Argentine singer Facundo Cabral in Guatemala.
Alejandro Jimenez was captured in Bahia Solano, Choco province, which borders Panama.
The apprehension of Jimenez "confirms that international cooperation gives effective results," Costa Rican Attorney General Jorge Chavarria told Radio Reloj.
Costa Rica's Deputy Security Minister, Celso Gamboa, said that it was not known immediately if the suspect will be sent to San Jose, where he is wanted for money laundering, or to Guatemala for Cabral's killing.
But Colombia's top cop, Gen. Oscar Naranjo, said Tuesday that authorities in his country are studying the most expeditious way in which to hand Jimenez over to Guatemala.
Cabral, an iconic figure known for his protest songs, social commitment and spiritual reflections, was killed last July while riding with a concert promoter from his hotel to the Guatemala City airport.
The 74-year-old singer died as he was preparing to leave Guatemala after a week in the Central American nation, while the promoter, Nicaraguan businessman Henry Farina, was seriously wounded.
Guatemalan investigators subsequently concluded that Farina, a former business partner of Jimenez, was the intended target of the attack.
